He received his medical education at Shanghai Medical University in Shanghai， China， where he was awarded his M.D.， M.Sc. and Ph.D. He spent 4 years as a Visiting Research Scientist at the Harvard Medical School Deaconess Hospital in Boston， Massachusetts， U.S.A. before returning to China in 1992.
